Connecting solar panels to your meter cabinet in Noord-Brabant usually costs between €150 and €600. What determines the price of connecting?

No two roofs and meter cabinets are the same. Together these points determine what connecting your solar panels costs. That way you understand where your price comes from.

  • Separate circuit or not

    A PV installation belongs on its own circuit with its own breaker. If there is room in the fuse box, that is a small job. If the box is full, extra work comes up.

  • Single-phase or three-phase

    A small set of panels is connected to single-phase. For a large system a three-phase inverter is sensible, and sometimes your meter cabinet needs upgrading first.

  • Length of the cabling

    The cable runs from the inverter in the loft or on the roof to the meter cabinet. The longer and more awkward that route (feed-throughs, drilling, chasing in), the more time and materials.

  • Type and location of the inverter

    Connecting a single string inverter is standard work. Micro-inverters or optimisers, or an inverter in an awkward spot, take more time to connect neatly.

  • Condition of the meter cabinet

    A modern fuse box with room and good earthing is quickly done. An old fuse board or poor earthing has to be put right first, otherwise it is not safe.

  • Separate work or done all at once

    If you have the panels and the connection done by the same team, that saves on the journey. Having just the connection done is also possible, for example after a job by a PV company.

Connecting solar panels seems simple, but it demands care. This all plays a part in the choice and the costs, so you know what you are getting into.

Fitting panels and connecting them are two things

Many people have the panels fitted by a PV company. That is the roof work: mounting the panels and hanging the inverter. The electrical connection is a separate job: safely connecting the inverter to your fuse box, creating a dedicated circuit and testing everything to the NEN 1010 standard.

Some PV companies do that connection themselves, others do not, or not as a certified electrician. If you want to be sure the connection is correct and safe, or you have individual panels or an inverter that needs connecting, you call in a certified electrician. That is exactly what this page is about.

Why a safe connection matters

An inverter feeds power back into your installation. If the connection is done sloppily or without the right protection, that is a risk: overheating, unreliable earthing or a circuit that is not properly protected. In the event of fire or damage, an insurer looks at whether the work was done by a certified professional and to standard.

A dedicated circuit with the right breaker and good earthing ensure your system exports safely and shuts off neatly when it should. We hand over the connection tested, with a measurement report, so you know for certain it is correct.

Net metering is being phased out: mind your meter reading

Up to and including 2026 you can still fully offset the power you export against what you draw. From 2027 the net metering scheme ends and you only receive a payment for exported power. It then pays off more to use your own generation.

That makes a good connection and using your power smartly (for example with a home battery or by running appliances during the day) more important. Feel free to ask us for advice on what is sensible in your situation.

VAT and the 0% rate on solar panels

For the supply and installation of solar panels on or at a home, a VAT rate of 0% has applied since 2023. That means you no longer pay VAT on the panels themselves and the associated fitting, and no longer have to reclaim the VAT from the tax authorities.

Please note: this 0% rate applies to the solar panel installation as a whole. Separate electrical work that stands apart from it, such as upgrading your meter cabinet to three-phase or other work in the fuse box, can fall under the normal 21% rate. What applies in your case depends on the situation. We always set it out clearly and correctly on the quote, so you know exactly where you stand.

Choose the right size straight away
