What does applying for a three-phase connection mean?
The Netherlands has two types of low-voltage connection. A single-phase connection runs on 230 volts and delivers current via one phase. A three-phase connection uses three phases, with 400 volts between them. This allows more power to come in at once and distributes the load neatly across three channels. In practice, applying for a three-phase connection means upgrading your mains supply: from single-phase to three-phase, or from a lighter three-phase to a heavier one. This always goes through your grid operator.
The division of responsibility matters. The grid operator is responsible for everything up to and including the meter: the main fuse, the supply cable if needed and the meter. You submit your application through Mijnaansluiting.nl. Everything behind the meter, your meter cabinet and fuse box, is the work of a certified electrician. Warning signs
When do you need three-phase?
The energy transition is usually the trigger. If you recognise any of these situations, a three-phase connection is worth considering.
A heat pump
Many fully electric heat pumps need a lot of power at once. Larger models in particular run more comfortably on three-phase, with start-up currents spread neatly across the phases.
An 11 kW EV charger
Charging at 11 kW is only possible with three-phase. On single-phase, charging is limited to about 3.7 kW, which is much slower.
Heavy induction cooking
A full induction hob peaks considerably. Alongside other high-demand appliances, single-phase can quickly become too limited.
Home battery or many solar panels
With a three-phase inverter you spread the export across three phases, reducing the risk of the inverter tripping due to excessive grid voltage.
Heavy-duty power or a workshop
An instantaneous water heater, sauna, swimming pool equipment or machinery and welding equipment in a workshop often require a three-phase connection.
The main fuse keeps tripping
If the main fuse trips regularly under simultaneous use, or the electrician says there is no room for another circuit, your supply is too light.

How to apply for a three-phase connection
The application process follows a fixed sequence. Here is exactly what happens and who does what.

Determine the connection rating
Discuss with an electrician which connection rating you need and check what you have now in your meter cabinet. Do not go heavier than necessary: that keeps your fixed network costs down.

Check network capacity
Through Mijnaansluiting.nl and your grid operator's checker you can see whether capacity is available at your address and what the expected lead time is.

Submit the application
You submit your application through Mijnaansluiting.nl, the central portal for the grid operators. In Noord-Brabant this mostly goes to Enexis.

Upgrade and meter cabinet preparation
The grid operator upgrades the supply: the main fuse, the cable if needed and the meter. A certified electrician prepares your meter cabinet. The latter is our Upgrade to three-phase service.

Three questions that come up regularly around applying for three-phase. We explain them calmly.
Who does what: the grid operator, the electrician and you?
The grid operator is responsible for the connection up to and including the meter. They adjust the main fuse, replace the supply cable if needed and fit a new meter. You apply for this through Mijnaansluiting.nl. The grid operator has no say over your internal installation.
The certified electrician adjusts everything behind the meter: the fuse box, the circuits, the earthing and the cabling to, for example, your heat pump or EV charger. That is our Upgrade to three-phase service. Your own role is limited: discuss the right connection rating and submit the application. Digging or tampering with the main supply yourself is not allowed and is dangerous.
Do I already have a three-phase connection?
You can usually see this in your meter cabinet. With single-phase, there is one fuse or main switch with two wires, and it typically shows 1x25A or 1x35A. With three-phase, you see a wider main switch with four poles and a rating of 3x25A, 3x35A or higher. Not sure? An electrician can tell at a glance.
Your meter also gives a clue. A three-phase meter shows three phases, usually indicated as 3x230/400 V. If you are sure you already have three-phase but want a heavier supply, you apply for an upgrade within three-phase, for example from 3x25A to 3x35A.
3x25A or 3x35A: which connection rating should you choose?
For most homes with a heat pump or an 11 kW EV charger, 3x25A is more than sufficient. The advantage is that 3x25A falls in the same tariff category at the grid operator as single-phase. Your fixed network costs remain virtually the same. Switching from single-phase to 3x25A therefore barely increases your monthly costs.
Only when you need more simultaneous power, for example heavy usage or several large appliances at once, do you choose 3x35A or higher. Note: from 3x35A onwards, fixed network costs rise sharply. Do not go heavier than necessary, and have an electrician calculate your actual load.
Connection ratings and capacity
What your connection can handle depends on the connection rating: the number of phases multiplied by the current. For reference, the most common values with an indication of the available capacity.

Three-phase capacity is calculated as the square root of 3 times 400 V times the current. Up to 3x80A you are a small consumer with fixed tariffs. Always check the current values and rates with your grid operator.

What does applying for a three-phase connection cost at the grid operator?
The costs consist of three parts: the one-off charge from the grid operator, the ongoing network costs and the electrician's work on your meter cabinet. The latter falls under our Upgrade to three-phase service. Below is an indication of costs at the grid operator. Amounts are indicative and dated (Liander 2026 and Enexis 2025, including 21% VAT). Always check current rates with your own grid operator.
Common extras:
- Fixed capacity tariff up to 3x25A: ± € 476 per year (Enexis 2025), broadly the same as single-phase.
- From 3x35A: ± € 2,028 to € 4,907 per year in fixed network costs (Enexis 2025).
- Replacement of supply cable or meter cabinet: surcharge from the grid operator.
- Electrician's work on the meter cabinet and fuse box: separate quote.

Applying for three-phase in Noord-Brabant
Large parts of Noord-Brabant have a congested grid. From 1 July 2026, small consumers too, meaning connections up to 3x80A, are placed on a waiting list where the network is full. Priority is no longer based on the size of your application, but on social importance. In areas including Eindhoven, Helmond, Tilburg and Uden, little capacity is expected to become available in the short term. The grid operator for the greater part of Brabant is Enexis.
Our advice: apply in good time and check capacity at your address beforehand. Where the network has room, it goes relatively quickly, from a few weeks to a few months. Where the network is full, the waiting time can stretch considerably: in extreme cases according to Enexis up to ten years. Do not wait until your heat pump or EV charger is already installed.
