What does an RCD do, and why is it so important?

The RCD (earth leakage circuit breaker) is the most important safety device in your meter cabinet. It continuously monitors whether all the current going into a circuit also comes back out. If current leaks away, for example through a faulty appliance, a damaged cable or moisture in the bathroom, it switches off within milliseconds. That difference of 30 milliamps (30 mA) is precisely calibrated to protect you from electrocution: it is the difference between a fright and a life-threatening shock.

An ordinary fuse or circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuits, but not you from a shock. That is what only the RCD does. This is why NEN 1010, the standard for safe electrical installations in the home, requires at least two 30 mA RCDs in the consumer unit, so that your whole house does not all go off at once and protection is always maintained. If your RCD is not working properly or is missing, you are unprotected. That is not something to put off.

Warning signs

When should you replace or add an RCD?

Some signs point to wear or a fault; others indicate a consumer unit that no longer meets the standard. If you recognise any of them, have your RCD checked without delay.

  • It trips frequently

    An RCD that keeps tripping is usually warning of a real leakage current in an appliance or cable. The cause should be identified first, then the RCD replaced.

  • The test button does not respond

    The T button should make the RCD trip immediately. If it does not, the protection is no longer reliable and the RCD must be replaced.

  • An old consumer unit without an RCD

    An old-style fuse box or consumer unit without an RCD offers no protection against shock. We fit one, or replace the whole unit.

  • Burning smell or discolouration near the unit

    Can you smell burning or see brown marks around the RCD? That is urgent. Call us and we will come and take a look straight away.

  • After a shock

    Did you get a shock from an appliance or tap? Have your installation checked. The RCD is there specifically to protect you from exactly that kind of shock.

  • Extension or new heavy appliances

    An EV charger, heat pump or extra circuit often needs its own RCD protection. When extending, we check straight away whether your consumer unit still meets the standard.

Can you replace an RCD yourself?

Pressing the test button is something you should absolutely do yourself, preferably a few times a year. It is how you check whether the protection is still working. Replacing or connecting the RCD itself is work inside the consumer unit and must be carried out by a certified electrician, in accordance with NEN 1010.

RCD or combined circuit breaker (RCD+MCB)?

An RCD protects several circuits at once against leakage current but has no overload protection of its own. That is handled by the individual circuit breakers, the modern replacements for fuses. If the RCD trips, all circuits behind it go off at once, leaving, for example, a whole floor without power.

A combined circuit breaker (RCD+MCB) combines both in one module, per circuit: protection against shock and protection of the wiring together. If something goes wrong in the bathroom, only that circuit goes off and the rest of your home stays on. They cost a little more per unit, but offer more convenience and certainty. We give honest advice on what makes sense in your consumer unit.

Why specifically 30 mA?

The 30 mA refers to the leakage current difference at which the RCD trips: 30 milliamps. This is deliberately low, because a current through your body can become dangerous at that level. By switching off within milliseconds, the RCD keeps the duration and strength of any shock below the threshold that your heart and muscles can withstand.

This is called personal protection: the RCD is not there to protect your appliances, but to protect you and the people in your home. That is why every circuit that people can come into contact with must be protected by a 30 mA RCD. An older 300 mA RCD only protects against fire, not against a shock, and is therefore not adequate as personal protection.

Type A or type B: which do you need?

For standard household circuits, a type A RCD is the norm. It detects both normal AC leakage and the pulsating DC leakage that modern electronics can cause. For virtually everything in the home, type A is the right choice.

Type B is a heavier version that also detects pure DC leakage and is considerably more expensive. Type B was often mentioned for EV chargers, but many modern chargers already have built-in DC detection, which means an ordinary type A RCD is usually sufficient. We check the specification of your charger and advise on what is genuinely needed, so you do not pay unnecessarily for type B.

An RCD that keeps tripping is almost always warning of a real leakage current, usually in an appliance or cable. First unplug everything, switch the RCD back on and plug the appliances back in one by one. If it keeps tripping without finding the cause, call us. We trace the leakage current before replacing anything, because fitting a new RCD does not fix a genuine leak.

As long as the unit remains in place it is not illegal, but it is not safe: without an RCD you are not protected against electric shock. In many cases we can still fit a 30 mA RCD.
