What does upgrading to three-phase mean?

Upgrading means your supply can handle more power. Most homes currently have single-phase power: one live wire plus neutral, enough for normal household use. With three-phase, three live wires come in and the load is spread across three channels. Much more can run simultaneously without the main fuse tripping.

Important to know: the supply itself belongs to the grid operator, in Brabant that is Enexis. They adjust the main fuse, the cable and the meter. Everything behind the meter, your meter cabinet and fuse box, is our work. We prepare your installation for three-phase and handle the application with the grid operator, so everything is managed in one place.

When do you need three-phase?

The energy transition is often the trigger. If you recognise any of these situations, upgrading is worth considering.

  • An EV charger at home

    A standard 11 kW EV charger runs on three-phase. That way you charge faster without overloading a single phase.

  • A heat pump

    Many fully electric heat pumps require three-phase, especially the larger models. Start-up currents are then spread neatly across the phases.

  • Induction cooking

    A full induction hob can draw significant peaks. Sometimes a dedicated cooking circuit is enough; sometimes three-phase is the better choice. We give honest advice on what suits you.

  • Home battery or many solar panels

    Want to support a larger part of your home or export from many panels? Three-phase is often the logical step.

  • The main fuse keeps tripping

    If the main fuse trips regularly when a lot is running at once, your supply is simply too light.

  • Several plans at the same time

    EV charger, heat pump and induction hob all coming together? Make the move to three-phase in one go, that is the most future-proof approach.

The technical side, in plain English

Two questions we often get about three-phase. We explain them calmly.

Is three-phase more dangerous or more expensive per kWh?

No. Three-phase is not a higher voltage, just more power spread across three wires. Between phase and neutral you still have 230 volts, exactly as before. The price per kWh does not change: you do not pay more for your electricity, you can simply use more at the same time.

Good to know: the most popular upgrade, to 3x25A, falls in the same tariff category at the grid operator as single-phase. Your fixed network costs stay the same. Only with a heavier connection, 3x35A and above, do those fixed costs rise significantly. That is why we only go heavier when your situation genuinely calls for it.

Upgrading or replacing the fuse box?

These are two different things that often go together. Upgrading is the supply itself, the grid operator's work. The fuse box is the distribution inside the home, our work. To use three-phase, your fuse box needs to be ready for it.

In practice we therefore often replace or upgrade the fuse box in the same job. We co-ordinate everything so that you end up with one working, safe installation.

The price consists of three parts: the one-off costs from the grid operator, our work on the meter cabinet, and sometimes higher fixed network costs with a heavier connection. We explain it clearly upfront and give a fixed price for our part. Below is an indication.

Good to know

Think in three parts: the grid operator typically charges a few hundred euros for the upgrade, for 3x25A often around € 300 to € 400. Our work on the meter cabinet usually falls between € 600 and € 900. For a connection heavier than 3x25A, higher fixed network costs come with it. You receive the exact price from us upfront, based on your situation.
Without network congestion it usually takes a few weeks to months, determined by the grid operator's schedule. In areas where the network is full, it can take longer or join a waiting list. Apply in good time, then. Only the grid operator can give a binding lead time.
The application goes through Mijnaansluiting.nl or Mijn Enexis, and may only be carried out by or on behalf of the grid operator. We take the application and the preparation of your meter cabinet completely off your hands, so you do not have to figure anything out.
One extra heavy appliance sometimes still fits within a heavier single-phase connection. But for a combination of heat pump, EV charger and induction hob, or for appliances that require three-phase such as an 11 kW EV charger, 3x25A is the logical and future-proof answer. We calculate it for you with a load calculation.
The price per kWh does not change with the upgrade. With 3x25A your fixed network costs also stay the same as single-phase. Only with 3x35A or heavier do the fixed costs rise significantly. If you then consume more electricity, you will naturally pay more, but that is because of your usage, not the phase.
Upgrading is about the supply: the grid operator adjusts the main fuse, cable and meter. Replacing the fuse box or adding a circuit is an internal installation, that is what we do. They often go together: we prepare your meter cabinet for three-phase, the grid operator upgrades the supply.
During the work you will be without power for roughly half an hour to a maximum of two hours. Afterwards your meter will show 3x230/400 V and the main switch will have four poles. Your heavy appliances can then run simultaneously without the main fuse tripping.
Yes. When switching to three-phase, the grid operator typically installs a new three-phase smart meter. It measures your draw and export per phase. The grid operator arranges this as part of the upgrade.
