Price breakdown

What determines the price of a new fuse box?

Two boxes are rarely the same. Together these points determine what your fuse box costs. That way you understand where your price comes from.

  • Number of circuits

The more circuits, the more materials and work. Heavy appliances such as a washing machine, oven and induction hob each belong on their own circuit, and that adds up.

  • Single-phase or three-phase

A three-phase box is built to a heavier specification and costs more. You need it if you want to connect an EV charger, heat pump or home battery.

  • RCDs and protection

Under NEN 1010 at least two 30 mA RCDs are required. Surge protection is optional but sensible, and affects the price.

  • Condition of the wiring and earthing

If the wiring or earthing is outdated, extra work comes up. With an old fuse board we always check this first.

  • Access to the meter cabinet

A cramped or boxed-in meter cabinet takes more time. The location of the cabinet (cellar, loft) also plays a part.

  • Emergency or planned

Planned work is better value. If it needs doing urgently, for example in an unsafe situation, an emergency surcharge may apply.

Worked examples

Worked examples from practice

To give a feel for the price, here are three situations of the kind we often come across in Brabant. You always get your price upfront, fixed and tailored.

Terraced house, old fuse board

A 1970s home with a ceramic fuse board and a single RCD. The residents want a safe, modern box with enough circuits for the kitchen and washing machine.

  • Fuse box, 6 circuits, single-phase€ 620
  • Two 30 mA RCDsincluded
  • Call-out charge€ 39
Total€ 659

The existing wiring was in order, so no extra work. Job finished in a day.

Semi-detached house, ready for an EV charger

A family with an electric car on the way. The old box is full and single-phase. They want a three-phase box straight away so the EV charger, and later a heat pump, can be added.

  • Fuse box, 8 circuits, three-phase€ 980
  • Surge protection€ 160
  • Call-out charge€ 39
Total€ 1.179

The three-phase connection itself requires Enexis; we arrange that application for you. See also our meter cabinet upgrade cost page.

Flat, a small job

A flat where the fuses trip now and again. A compact box with 4 circuits and modern protection is enough.

  • Fuse box, 4 circuits, single-phase€ 480
  • Call-out charge€ 39
Total€ 519

A compact job, neatly finished and tested in half a day.

Good to know

What exactly are you paying for?

Replacing a fuse box is more than hanging up a box. This is what is in the price, so you understand why quality work has its price.

Materials and parts

The box itself, the RCDs, the circuit breakers (circuits), the main switch and the associated materials together make up part of the price. We work with solid brands such as Hager, ABB or Schneider, not bargain-basement materials that you have to replace again after a few years.

The number of circuits determines how many circuit breakers and RCDs are needed. More circuits means more materials, but also an installation that is better distributed and safer.

Labour and fitting

An engineer isolates the installation, removes the old box, fits the new one, connects all the circuits, labels them clearly and tests the whole installation. Reckon on half a working day to a full day, depending on the size.

The labour also covers measuring and testing to the NEN 1010 standard. That is not a formality: it is the proof that your installation has been handed over safely.

Why not go for the cheapest?

You can find bare fuse boxes online for a couple of hundred euros. But without certified fitting, without RCDs in the right place and without a final test, that is not a saving but a risk. In the event of fire or damage, an insurer looks at whether the work was done by a certified professional and to standard.

We supply a box that is correct, handed over safely and comes with a 2-year guarantee. That is what you are paying for.

VAT and what is in the price

All prices on this page are including 21% VAT and including fitting. For replacing a fuse box in an existing home the normal VAT rate of 21% applies.

Our quote always states a fixed price: materials, labour, the call-out charge and the final test together. No after-the-fact billing, no surprises. Only if something unexpected turns up during the work, for example hidden outdated wiring, do we discuss it with you first before we continue.

Smart savings

Smart ways to save on your fuse box

Without compromising on safety, there are a few sensible ways to manage the costs.

Combine the work

Have the box replaced at the moment you need an EV charger, solar panels or extra circuits anyway. One journey and one job saves money.

Choose the right number of circuits

Not too few (or you will soon be stuck again), not needlessly many. We give honest advice on what suits your home and plans.

Plan ahead, do not wait for an emergency

A planned replacement is better value than an emergency job after a fault or a burning smell. If you spot the signs, do not wait too long.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the price

On average you pay €450 to €950 including fitting. A compact box with 3 to 5 circuits is around €450 to €600, while a large or three-phase box runs up to €1,100 or €1,200. You always get a fixed price upfront.
Yes. Our prices include materials, fitting, connection to the NEN 1010 standard and the final test. The call-out charge within Noord-Brabant is a fixed amount of €39.
A three-phase box is built to a heavier specification, with more and heavier components. You need it for high-power appliances such as an EV charger, heat pump or home battery. For a three-phase connection an application to the grid operator is sometimes needed too.
Individual tasks such as resetting a circuit are fine, but leave replacing the fuse box to a certified electrician. It is live work and must be done to the NEN 1010 standard. If you do it wrong yourself, it is dangerous and your insurer may refuse to pay out in the event of damage.
Usually half a working day to a full day. You will be without power for part of that time. We agree the day with you upfront and make sure everything works again and is tested by the end.
Yes. We give a 2-year guarantee on our work, and the manufacturer's warranty applies to the parts. We hand over the installation tested and to the NEN 1010 standard.
Replacing an old fuse board with a fuse box usually costs €450 to €950, depending on the number of circuits and single or three-phase. You then get a modern box with 30 mA RCDs and a main switch, safe to the NEN 1010 standard. The ceramic fuses are then a thing of the past.
Replacement is sensible if you still have an old fuse board or only one RCD, if the fuses trip more often, if you need more circuits, or if you want to connect an EV charger, solar panels or a heat pump. A burning smell, warm circuit breakers or discolouration in the box are also signs not to wait. In doubt? We will happily take a look with no obligation.
