What does a three-phase connection cost? Meter cabinet upgrade, prices 2026

Upgrading your meter cabinet to three-phase consists of two cost items. First, upgrading the connection itself, which grid operator Enexis arranges. Alongside that, we convert your meter cabinet and fit a new three-phase fuse box, for €850 to €1,400. Below we explain both items clearly, with the connection ratings and real worked examples.

Quick answer

In short

A three-phase connection costs you two things. Upgrading the connection via Enexis costs a one-off amount ranging from limited (to 3x25A) to several hundred or well over €1,000 (to 3x35A or 3x50A), plus a higher fixed grid charge per year. The conversion of your meter cabinet and a new three-phase fuse box we do for €850 to €1,400. Together, reckon on roughly €850 to €2,500.

Item A: upgrading the connection via Enexis

This is the connection itself, from your meter cabinet to the grid. Across the whole of Noord-Brabant, Enexis is the grid operator. You make the application (or we make it with you) via mijnaansluiting.nl. How much you pay depends on the connection rating you choose. The amounts below are indicative and change annually: for the current rate always check mijnaansluiting.nl or Enexis.

Connection ratingPowerWhen neededIndicative one-off costs
1x35A (now often standard)single-phase, ± 8 kWExisting situation, no upgradenone

Guide prices incl. VAT and fitting. You always get a fixed price upfront based on your own meter cabinet.

Price breakdown

What determines the price of upgrading to three-phase?

The two items together determine what you pay. These points are decisive, so you understand where your price comes from.

  • Chosen connection rating

Upgrading to 3x25A is often limited or free of charge with Enexis. If you choose 3x35A or 3x50A, the one-off costs run up to several hundred or well over €1,000. So do not choose heavier than you need.

  • Higher fixed grid charge

A heavier connection means a higher fixed rate per year (the fixed grid charge, also known as the standing charge). You pay that for as long as you keep the connection, so factor it into your decision.

  • Number of circuits in the new box

The more circuits, the more materials and work. Heavy appliances such as an EV charger, heat pump and induction hob each belong on their own circuit, distributed across the three phases.

  • Condition of meter cabinet and wiring

If the cabling or earthing is outdated, extra work comes up before the three-phase box can go in. With an old meter cabinet we always check this first.

  • Waiting time and grid congestion

In parts of Brabant the grid is busy. That costs no extra money, but it does cost time: the lead time at Enexis can grow. So plan your upgrade in good time.

  • Protection and handover

Under NEN 1010 at least two 30 mA RCDs, neatly distributed. Surge protection is optional but sensible with expensive equipment, and counts in the price.

Worked examples

Worked examples from practice

To give a feel for the price, here are three situations of the kind we often come across in Brabant. The grid operator item is listed separately, because Enexis bills that apart from us. You always get your price upfront, fixed and tailored.

Family with an EV charger, upgrade to 3x25A

A semi-detached house with an electric car. The single-phase box is full. They want to go to 3x25A so the EV charger can charge properly and safely without disrupting the rest of the house.

  • Three-phase fuse box, 8 circuits€ 1.050
  • Convert meter cabinet to three-phaseincluded
  • Call-out charge€ 39
  • Upgrade connection to 3x25A (Enexis, separate)usually limited
Total€ 1.089 + Enexis

To 3x25A the one-off Enexis item is usually limited. Do reckon on a higher fixed grid charge per year.

Adding a heat pump, upgrade to 3x35A

A terraced house coming off gas. A heat pump is being added, and there is already an induction hob. Together that requires more power, so it becomes 3x35A.

  • Three-phase fuse box, 10 circuits€ 1.250
  • Surge protection€ 160
  • Call-out charge€ 39
  • Upgrade connection to 3x35A (Enexis, separate)a few 100 to € 1.000+
Total€ 1.449 + Enexis

At 3x35A Enexis charges a one-off connection fee, plus a higher fixed rate per year. We arrange the application with you.

Induction plus EV charger, large box on 3x35A

A detached house with induction cooking, an EV charger and plans for solar panels. The residents want spare capacity in the box and deliberately choose 3x35A.

  • Three-phase fuse box, 12 circuits€ 1.380
  • Improve earthing€ 180
  • Call-out charge€ 39
  • Upgrade connection to 3x35A (Enexis, separate)a few 100 to € 1.000+
Total€ 1.599 + Enexis

The large box pays off: expanding for solar panels or a home battery can be done later without having to open up the box again.

Good to know

What exactly are you paying for?

Upgrading to three-phase involves two parties: the grid operator and the electrician. Here is how the cost breakdown works, so nothing catches you out.

The grid operator: the connection itself (Enexis)

The connection of your home to the grid belongs to the grid operator. Across the whole of Noord-Brabant that is Enexis (in other parts of the country it is Liander or Stedin, which is why you often come across those names online). If you want to go from single-phase to three-phase, you apply for it via mijnaansluiting.nl. Enexis determines and bills the one-off costs.

Upgrading to 3x25A is often limited or free of charge. If you go heavier, to 3x35A or 3x50A, reckon on several hundred to well over €1,000 as a one-off. These amounts change annually, so treat them as a guide: the current rate is on mijnaansluiting.nl.

The fixed grid charge: the recurring costs

Besides the one-off connection costs, you pay the grid operator a fixed amount per year for your connection: the standing charge, also known as the recurring grid charge. For homes, that fixed annual amount depends partly on how heavy your connection is. So a heavier three-phase connection means a higher fixed item on your energy bill, every year again.

That is no reason not to do it, but it is a reason to choose deliberately. Do not take a heavier rating than you really need. For a single EV charger or heat pump, 3x25A is often more than enough.

The electrician: conversion and three-phase fuse box (us)

As soon as the heavier connection is in place, we convert your meter cabinet. We fit a three-phase fuse box, distribute the circuits neatly across the three phases, connect everything to the NEN 1010 standard and test the installation. That work costs €850 to €1,400, depending on the number of circuits and the condition of your meter cabinet.

A good distribution across the phases is skilled work: it prevents one phase becoming overloaded while the other two do nothing. That is what you pay for, and it is exactly the difference between a box that is correct and one that causes problems later.

VAT and what is in the price

Our prices are including 21% VAT and including fitting. For converting the meter cabinet and fitting a three-phase fuse box in an existing home the normal VAT rate of 21% applies.

The one-off connection costs and the fixed grid charge are billed by Enexis directly to you, separate from our quote. Those amounts are indicative and change annually: the current rate is on mijnaansluiting.nl. Our own quote always states a fixed price upfront for our work, with no surprises afterwards.

Smart savings

Smart ways to save on upgrading to three-phase

Without compromising on safety, there are a few sensible ways to manage the costs.

Choose the right connection rating

Do not take a heavier rating than you need. For a single EV charger or heat pump, 3x25A is often enough, and that saves both the one-off connection costs and the fixed rate per year.

Combine the work

Have the meter cabinet converted at the moment you are having an EV charger, heat pump or home battery fitted anyway. One journey and one job saves costs.

Apply in good time

Because of grid congestion in Brabant, the lead time at Enexis can grow. Applying in good time costs nothing extra and prevents your appliance sitting there unable to run yet.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the price

Reckon on two items. Together, roughly €850 to €2,500.
Liander and Stedin are grid operators in other parts of the Netherlands. Across the whole of Noord-Brabant, Enexis is the grid operator. The setup is the same everywhere: upgrading to 3x25A is often limited or free of charge, heavier (3x35A or 3x50A) costs several hundred to well over €1,000. The rates change annually, so for your current situation check mijnaansluiting.nl.
The connection to the grid belongs to the grid operator (Enexis), who bills the upgrade and the fixed annual rate directly to you. Converting your meter cabinet and the new three-phase fuse box are our work, which is in our quote. Two parties, two items: that is how it works with every upgrade.
That depends on what you connect. For a single EV charger or a single heat pump, 3x25A is usually more than enough. If you have an EV charger and heat pump together, 3x35A makes more sense. 3x50A is for heavy use with several high-power appliances. Do not choose heavier than you need, because that raises your fixed rate per year. We give honest advice on what suits.
Our work (converting the meter cabinet and fitting the three-phase box) is usually done in half a day to a full day. The lead time is mainly with Enexis: because of grid congestion in parts of Brabant, the application can take several weeks to months. That is why we recommend applying in good time.
Yes, you pay the grid operator a higher fixed grid charge for as long as you have the heavier connection. That is the recurring item alongside the one-off connection costs. Our work is a one-off. So do not take a heavier rating than you need.
Yes. We know the procedure via mijnaansluiting.nl and the waiting times in the region, and are happy to arrange the application with you. As soon as Enexis has arranged the heavier connection, we convert your meter cabinet and hand over the three-phase box tested and to the NEN 1010 standard.
No. Converting to three-phase is live work and must be done by a certified electrician to the NEN 1010 standard. If you do it wrong yourself, it is dangerous and your insurer may refuse to pay out in the event of damage. You get a 2-year guarantee on our work.

Upgrading to three-phase in Noord-Brabant

Across the whole of Noord-Brabant, Enexis is the grid operator, from Eindhoven to Breda and from Den Bosch to Tilburg. The application to upgrade your connection goes via mijnaansluiting.nl. We know that procedure and are happy to arrange the application with you.

In some places in Brabant the grid is busy (grid congestion). That costs you no extra money, but the waiting time at Enexis can grow. Our advice: start in good time, especially if your upgrade is tied to an EV charger, heat pump or home battery you want to use soon. The call-out charge within the region is a fixed amount, so you never face a travel-surcharge surprise.
