Underground cable, extra work and several points at once
As soon as cable goes into the ground or across a path, some extra work comes into play. And if you have several points installed in one go, the price per unit drops. These are the most common items.

Price breakdown
What determines the price of outdoor lighting?
No two gardens are the same. Together these points determine what your outdoor lighting costs. That way you understand where your price comes from.
Number of points
One wall light or a whole garden path full of spotlights: the more lights and points, the more materials and work. Several points at once does work out cheaper per unit.
Cabling and groundwork
Is there already a connection point, or does the cable need to go into the ground? Digging, laying an underground cable at the right depth and putting paving back takes extra time.
Splash-proof (IP44 or higher)
Anything mounted outside has to cope with rain. We fit light fittings, sockets and connections splash-proof, at least IP44. That is not a luxury but a requirement.
230V or 12V with transformer
Atmospheric garden spotlights often run on 12V and need a transformer. A wall light or outdoor socket simply runs on 230V. Both are possible, and the setup determines the price.
Separate circuit or branch
Sometimes the lighting can go on an existing circuit, sometimes a separate circuit in the meter cabinet is neater and safer. Everything ends up behind an RCD.
Sensors and switching
A motion sensor, dusk sensor or app control adds convenience and raises the price a little. Handy at a driveway or back door.

Wall light with motion sensor by the front door
A home where the path to the front door is pitch dark in the evening. The residents want a tidy wall light that comes on by itself as you approach.

What exactly are you paying for?
Outdoors places stricter demands than indoors: rain, frost and digging call for the right approach. This is what is in the price, so you understand why quality work has its price.
Splash-proof and the underground cable
Anything mounted or laid outside has to cope with water. We use light fittings, sockets and connections with at least IP44, so splash-proof. For a socket in an exposed spot we often go a step higher. That keeps your installation safe, even after a heavy downpour.
Cable that goes into the ground must be a proper underground cable and lie at the right depth, usually around 40 to 60 centimetres. That prevents you putting a spade through it and keeps things safe. If the cable runs under paving, lifting and relaying the tiles is added, and you see that back in the price per metre.
230V or 12V with transformer
A wall light, outdoor socket or a bright floodlight simply runs on 230V, just like indoors. That is the simplest setup and needs no extra box.
Atmospheric garden spotlights often run on 12V. That is safe low voltage, useful when cables lie just under the lawn or along the border. A transformer is then needed to bring the 230V down to 12V. We conceal that transformer neatly, for example in the meter cabinet, a store room or a splash-proof box outside.
Switching: sensor, dusk or app
You can have your outdoor lighting switched in various ways. A motion sensor turns the light on as soon as someone approaches, handy at a driveway or back door. A dusk sensor turns the lighting on by itself when it gets dark and off when it gets light.
If you want to control everything from the sofa or your phone, the lighting can also be switched smartly. That ties in nicely with home automation. We give honest advice on what suits your garden and use, so you do not pay for gadgets you do not need.
VAT and what is in the price
All prices on this page are including 21% VAT and including fitting. For installing outdoor lighting at an existing home the normal VAT rate of 21% applies.
Our quote always states a fixed price: materials, labour, the call-out charge and connection to the NEN 1010 standard together. No after-the-fact billing, no surprises. If something unexpected comes up during the digging, for example an old pipe, we discuss it with you first before we continue.

Smart ways to save on your outdoor lighting
Without compromising on safety, there are a few sensible ways to manage the costs.
Install several points in one go
One journey and one round of digging saves a lot. If you know you will want another spotlight or socket later, lay the cable at the same time. You are then better off per point.
Choose LED and smart switching
LED outdoor lighting uses little power and lasts for years. With a dusk sensor or motion sensor the light only comes on when needed, which saves on your electricity bill.
Combine with other garden work
Is the garden open anyway for paving or a new border? Then have the underground cable laid at the same time. Cable in an open garden is a lot cheaper than routing it under the tiles afterwards.
