Where you charge makes a big difference to the price per kWh. These are guide prices, depending on your energy contract. Charging at home is usually the cheapest, especially if you charge on your own solar power.

What determines the price of a home EV charger?

No two driveways are the same. Together these points determine what your EV charger costs. That way you understand where your price comes from.

  • Type and power of the EV charger

    A basic single-phase EV charger is cheaper than a three-phase 11 kW model. Smart charging, a display or solar charging make the EV charger more expensive, but often well worth it.

  • Single-phase or three-phase

    With three-phase (11 kW) you charge considerably faster. Your meter cabinet has to be able to handle that, though. If it is still single-phase, an upgrade via grid operator Enexis is sometimes needed.

  • Distance to the meter cabinet

    The further the EV charger is from the meter cabinet, the more cable and work. A driveway at the front with a meter cabinet at the back of the house costs more than a short, straight run.

  • Fitting and feed-through

    Mounting on the wall is the simplest. A free-standing charger on a post, or cable through a wall, garden or crawl space, costs extra time and materials.

  • Condition of your meter cabinet

    An EV charger belongs on its own circuit with the right protection. If your fuse box is full or outdated, an adjustment is needed before the EV charger can be added.

  • Smart charging and load balancing

    Do you want to charge on your own solar power or prevent the fuses tripping at peak use? Then load balancing is sensible. That requires a smart EV charger and a little extra installation.

A home EV charger is more than a plug on the wall. This is what is in the price, what charging costs and how it stands with subsidies.

The EV charger, the installation and the safety

The EV charger (wallbox) itself makes up part of the price. A basic single-phase model is available from around €500, while a smart three-phase EV charger runs up to €1,200. More expensive models offer smart charging, solar charging, an app and sometimes a display.

A certified engineer does the installation: running the cable, putting a dedicated circuit with the right earth leakage protection in the meter cabinet, mounting the EV charger and connecting and testing everything to the NEN 1010 standard. Reckon on €300 to €700, depending on the cable distance, the feed-through and the condition of your meter cabinet.

What does charging at home cost per kWh?

Charging at home costs around €0.30 to €0.40 per kWh, depending on your energy contract. If you have solar panels and charge during the day on your own power, that is a lot lower.

For comparison: a public charging point soon charges €0.50 to €0.70 per kWh, and rapid charging on the motorway is more expensive still. Reckoning on a car that uses around 18 kWh per 100 km, a full battery of 60 kWh costs roughly €18 to €24 at home. For most people a home EV charger pays for itself within a few years.

Subsidy and tax relief: being honest

For an EV charger at a private home there is no broad national purchase subsidy in 2026. There are sometimes local or municipal schemes; it is worth checking with your own municipality. We promise you nothing that does not exist.

For business use it is different. If you use the EV charger (partly) for business, for example as an entrepreneur or sole trader, the costs are often tax-deductible and you can sometimes make use of schemes such as the MIA or EIA. Take advice from your accountant on this, because it depends on your situation.

VAT and what is in the price

All prices on this page are including 21% VAT and including installation. For fitting an EV charger at an existing home the normal VAT rate of 21% applies.

Do you have solar panels? Then choose an EV charger that can charge on your own generated power. Charging during the day on solar energy is almost free and quickly repays the extra cost of a smart EV charger.

Combine the work

Does your meter cabinet need to go to three-phase anyway, or do you want solar panels or a home battery? Have it all done in one go. One journey and one job saves on the costs.

Choose the right power

If you charge overnight and drive ordinary distances, 3.7 kW is often already enough. Do not pay for 22 kW if your car and your usage do not call for it. We give honest advice on what suits you.
