Requesting a three-phase connection: how it works

Most older homes have a single-phase connection. That means all your power comes into the house through a single phase, usually 1x35A or 1x40A. For an ordinary household that was ample for a long time: lighting, a few appliances, a gas hob. But as soon as you add heavier users, you quickly reach the ceiling of what that one phase can handle.

With a three-phase connection the power comes in through three phases. You can spread the load across those three, which lets you draw much more power at once without overloading. An EV charger that charges fast, a heat pump working hard on a cold morning and induction cooking at the same time: that calls for the extra headroom. Three-phase is therefore not a luxury but a basic requirement for a home that is going electric.

Worth knowing: three-phase is about how much you can use at once, not automatically about higher power use or a bigger bill. Your energy use depends on what your appliances actually draw. The connection only determines the maximum simultaneous load.

The rule of thumb: when several heavy users get in each other's way. A single EV charger that charges slowly can sometimes just about manage on single-phase. But if you want fast charging, or add a heat pump, single-phase becomes tight. And if you also use those things at the same time as induction cooking, the main fuse will trip sooner or later.

In practice you mainly see three-phase come up with these combinations: an EV charger you want to charge at home with more power, a heat pump for your heating, induction cooking instead of gas, and sometimes a home battery you want to charge and discharge quickly. On their own they are often still manageable; together they are not.

Not sure whether you really need it? Have a certified electrician look at your situation before you apply for anything. Sometimes a smart charging strategy or load balancing turns out to be enough, and sometimes upgrading is unavoidable. Better to know that beforehand than to get stuck halfway.

A three-phase connection involves two parties, and it helps to know early who does what. The grid operator is responsible for everything up to and including your meter: the cable from the grid, the connection itself and the meter. In Noord-Brabant the grid operator in most municipalities is Enexis. You apply for the upgrade with them via mijnaansluiting.nl, the central point for this kind of application.

Everything behind the meter is for a certified electrician. They make sure your fuse box is ready for three-phase: the right main switch, 30 mA RCDs, the load neatly spread across the three phases and circuits that match your new users. Often that means a new or adapted fuse box, so it can safely carry the extra capacity.

The two strands interlock. The grid operator only upgrades once the application is complete, and the work in the meter cabinet has to be right before you can load everything. An electrician who knows the region coordinates the two: they know how the application runs, factor in the waiting time at Enexis and make sure the box is ready on time. That way you do not have to translate between two parties.

You do not arrange a three-phase connection in an afternoon. From application, allow several weeks to several months, depending on how busy the grid operator is and the situation on site. Part of that time is planning and admin, part is the actual work. So apply in good time, especially if your renovation or your EV charger has a deadline.

Pressure on the grid plays a part. In many places in Noord-Brabant there is grid congestion: the grid is full, and that can delay applications. For an ordinary household upgrade the impact is usually smaller than for large consumers, but it can still stretch the lead time. Bear that in mind when you plan.

There are two sides to the costs. The grid operator charges one-off connection costs for the upgrade, and after that you pay periodic costs that go with a heavier connection (the standing charge rises with the capacity). On top of that you pay the certified electrician for the work on your meter cabinet and fuse box. What it comes to for you depends on your current box and the capacity you want. Ask for a quote for the installation and check the current rates with the grid operator, so you know where you stand beforehand.
