What exactly is a plug-in home battery?
A plug-in home battery, sometimes called a balcony battery, is a battery pack you connect yourself to an ordinary socket without an installer. You do not need to touch the fuse box and there is no fixed cabling: plug in and you are done. That makes it popular with people who want to try out storage without immediately committing to a major investment and an installer visit.
In practice you see these batteries mainly in combination with balcony solar panels or other plug-in panels. The idea: the sun charges the battery during the day, and in the evening you use that power again. The batteries are compact, stand loose in a utility room or storage area and are considerably smaller than a hard-wired system. You are typically talking about half a kilowatt-hour to a few kilowatt-hours of capacity, whereas a hard-wired home battery quickly does five to fifteen kilowatt-hours.
Important to understand: a plug-in battery is a different product from a classic home battery. It is not a small version of the same thing, but its own category with its own possibilities and its own limitations. Anyone who confuses the two will be disappointed.
The advantages: low-threshold and flexible
The biggest plus is the low threshold. You do not strictly need a certified installer, no adaptation to your meter cabinet and no waiting time for an appointment. For a rental property or a flat where you cannot simply touch the installation, that is a real argument. You sort it yourself, in an afternoon.
A plug-in battery is also portable. If you move house, you simply take it with you, just like your fridge. A hard-wired system you usually leave behind or have disconnected at cost. For anyone who has not been in one place long, that flexibility counts.
Finally, the investment is smaller. A compact plug-in battery costs a fraction of a full system. If you mainly want to try out how storage feels, or only want to shift a small part of your consumption, that can be a deliberate choice. As long as you know what it does not solve.
The caveats: what you really need to watch
Start with capacity. A plug-in battery is small, and the power that flows via an ordinary socket and the plug-in panels is limited. You can offset part of your evening consumption with it, but you will not make your home self-sufficient. Do not delude yourself: with a small system the payback time is often disappointing, especially if the purchase price per kilowatt-hour is relatively high.
Then there is safety. Electrics in and around the home should comply with NEN 1010, the standard for a safe installation. A battery you plug into a socket yourself falls outside the familiar route of a certified installation. Cheap or poorly certified batteries carry a real fire risk. So pay attention to certification marks, a sound battery management system and a manufacturer you can trace. Never put such a battery away on a flammable surface or in a sealed cupboard without ventilation.
The most contentious point is feeding back via a socket. A system that pushes power back into the socket, so supplying energy rather than only drawing it, is technically and legally disputed. It clashes with the rules around connecting to the grid and with the requirements that grid operators and the standard impose. Some plug-in batteries are therefore deliberately designed so that they only give stored power back to your own appliances and send nothing to the grid. Always check the current terms and what the manufacturer actually promises, and be critical of big claims.
Also think about your insurance. If you connect equipment yourself that causes damage or a fire, an insurer can be difficult about cover, especially if it was not installed to the rules. That risk weighs more heavily than the saving on an installer.
When do you still choose a hard-wired battery?
If you genuinely want to store solar energy, flatten your peak consumption and relieve your home, then a hard-wired home battery is the logical choice. It is connected to your fuse box by a certified installer, to NEN 1010, with the correct protection and an inverter that works neatly with the grid. Larger, safer and built to last for years.
Such a system can store multiple kilowatt-hours, works together with your existing solar panels and is designed to feed back safely within the rules. Now that net metering is being phased out, it is becoming more attractive to store your own solar power rather than sell it to the grid at a low rate. For that step you need the capacity and safety that a plug-in battery cannot provide.
